Prof. em. Dr. Catherine Verfaillie

Catherine Verfaillie received her medical degree from KU Leuven and specialised in internal medicine there. She then moved to the United States as a research fellow at the University of Minnesota, focusing on haematopoiesis and the stromal control of haematopoietic stem cells. In 1991 she became a professor in the Department of Medicine and was promoted to full professor in 1997. From 1998 to 2006 she was Director of the Stem Cell Institute at the University of Minnesota.

In 2006 she returned to KU Leuven as Director of the Interdepartmental Stem Cell Institute Leuven (SCIL). She has a longstanding career in stem cell biology and is now Emeritus Professor.
